Tickets: €15 or the Museum Pass?

The museums belong to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, not to the National Palaces Administration that runs Topkapı next door, so prices come from the Ministry's museum and site fee list. It lists one ticket at €15 for foreign visitors, naming all three units: the Arkeoloji Müzesi, the Eski Şark Eserleri Müzesi (Museum of the Ancient Orient) and the Çinili Köşk (Tiled Kiosk). The list quotes Istanbul prices in euros only and prints no reduced rate for foreign children or students.

At the Central Bank's indicative selling rate for 2 November 2026 (€1 = 55.996 TL), €15 is about 840 TL.

The MuseumPass Istanbul page names the Archaeological Museums as one of its 13 museums. The pass costs €105, lasts five days from the first museum you enter, and allows one entry per museum. On its own, then, the pass is a poor deal for this visit: it costs seven times the single ticket.

Your Ministry museums in five days Single tickets (fee list) Museum Pass Better choice
Archaeological Museums only €15 €105 Single ticket
+ Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts €32 €105 Single tickets
+ Galata Tower €62 €105 Single tickets
+ Maiden's Tower €89 €105 Single tickets, by €16

Prices for the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (€17), the Galata Tower (€30) and the Maiden's Tower (€27) come from the same fee list. Only the first two are named on the pass page; we could not confirm that the Maiden's Tower is one of the 13. Even with all four, single tickets still come out cheaper, so the pass only pays off if you add more paid Ministry sites. Our Museum Pass Istanbul guide works through bigger itineraries.

Hours and the 17:30 cut-off

The Ministry's museum page gives a single timetable with no summer or winter variant:

  • Open 09:00 to 18:30.
  • Ticket office closes 17:30.
  • Closed days: none ("her gün açık", open every day).

The page lists no holiday closures. That is not a promise that the museums never shut; check the page the day before a public holiday.

Istanbul, Türkiye

Where it is and how to pair it with Topkapı

The address on the Ministry page is Alemdar Caddesi, Osman Hamdi Bey Yokuşu, Gülhane. The city's tourism site, visit.istanbul, places the museums right next to Topkapı Palace in Sultanahmet.

That location shapes the plan, because the two sites close on different days. Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays and its ticket office runs from 09:00 to 17:00; its combined ticket with the Harem and Hagia Irene was 2,750 TL for foreign visitors on 3 November 2026. The Archaeological Museums list no closing day.

Your situation Plan
Topkapı and the museums on one day Topkapı from 09:00, the museums after lunch; reach their ticket office by 17:30
Visiting on a Tuesday Topkapı is closed, so give the museums a full, unhurried morning
Arriving after 16:30 Choose one: the museums sell tickets for another hour, Topkapı stops at 17:00
Short on time Ask at the entrance where the sarcophagi are and start there

Topkapı's ticket rules are in our Topkapı Palace tickets guide, and the weekly closing-days planner sets out which sights work on which day.

What the ticket covers

The Ministry page calls the complex Turkey's first museum. Organised museum work began here in 1869, Osman Hamdi Bey became director in 1881, and the classical main building, built opposite the Tiled Kiosk, opened to visitors in 1891. The Tiled Kiosk is the oldest of the three: built in 1472, it was restored and opened as a museum in 1880.

The page does not say whether any gallery is closed for restoration. If one particular object is the reason for your visit, ask at the ticket office before paying.
