The weekly pattern

Two bodies run the sights in this guide. The National Palaces Administration (Milli Saraylar) runs the Ottoman palaces, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism runs the Galata Tower and the Archaeological Museums. Their closing days come from each site's own page:

Sight Weekly closing day Ticket sales end Run by
Topkapı Palace Tuesday 17:00 National Palaces
Dolmabahçe Palace Monday 17:00 National Palaces
Beylerbeyi Palace Monday 17:00 National Palaces
Küçüksu Pavilion Monday 17:00 National Palaces
Yıldız Palace Wednesday 17:00 National Palaces
Galata Tower None listed 18:14 (day) Ministry
Istanbul Archaeological Museums None listed 17:30 Ministry

The National Palaces online ticket page sums it up the same way: its sites close on Mondays, except Topkapı, which closes on Tuesdays, and Yıldız, which closes on Wednesdays.

Ticket sales end well before closing. At the palaces the ticket office shuts at 17:00, and on the Ministry pages the Galata Tower stops selling day tickets at 18:14 and the Archaeological Museums at 17:30. A late-afternoon plan that reaches a palace at 17:05 fails, whatever the day.

A Monday-to-Wednesday plan

The closing days fit together if you give each its own day:

  • Monday: Topkapı Palace, with Hagia Sophia next door and, if you have time, the Archaeological Museums or the Galata Tower. Topkapı's combined ticket is valid for one day only, so do it in one go; our Topkapı tickets guide explains it.
  • Tuesday: the Bosphorus palaces. Dolmabahçe in the morning, then Beylerbeyi or Küçüksu across the water. The Dolmabahçe guide shows when the Kombine III combined ticket saves money.
  • Wednesday: anything except Yıldız Palace.

If your trip starts on a Tuesday, swap the first two days. The one combination to avoid is a Monday for the Bosphorus palaces: Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi and Küçüksu are all shut then. Our Beylerbeyi Palace guide and Galata Tower guide have each site's prices.

Holidays: 1 January and the Bayrams

The palace pages list their holiday closures, and they are not identical:

Day Topkapı Dolmabahçe Beylerbeyi Yıldız
1 January Closed Closed Closed Closed
Ramazan Bayramı, day 1 Closed Closed Closed Closed
Kurban Bayramı, day 1 Open Closed Closed Closed
Other Bayram days Open Open Open Open
29 October and other national days Open Open Open Open

The Topkapı and Dolmabahçe pages also say that when a holiday falls on the weekly closing day, the site stays closed. The palace pages do not give Bayram dates, so look them up for your travel year before you plan.

The Ministry pages for the Galata Tower and the Archaeological Museums list no holiday closures at all. That is not a promise that they never close; check the page the day before a public holiday.

Opening hours that differ between official pages

Two details need care. The palace pages show "09:00 17:30" in their header while giving a 17:00 ticket office closing; treat 17:00 as the last chance to buy. And the Ministry's MuseumPass page gives the Archaeological Museums an entry deadline of 18:45, while the museum's own page says the museum is open 09:00–18:30 with the ticket office closing at 17:30. Go by the museum page and arrive before 17:30.

For Hagia Sophia, which is a mosque with its own visiting rules rather than a palace or museum ticket, use our Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque guide.
